Working to the Beat: An Introduction

This website provides supplemental material for the paper "Working to the Beat: A Self-regulatory Framework for Listening to Music at Work." Here, we present audio examples of the various characteristics of music. We also briefly summarize immediate physiological and emotional responses elicited by music, as well as the in-role task performance outcomes that are likely affected by these characteristics. We also present a brief history of music in the workplace for those interested. Please note that we only present the characteristics that require audio aid to understand them. To learn about how other characteristics, such as volume, lyrics, familiarity, and musical preference, can potentially influence work outcomes and by what mechanisms, please see our paper. For those who would like to learn more about music theory than the cursory overview that we provide here, we recommend the following resource (click here).
